Biography[]

(Submitted by Mento)

Background[]

A Chinese man had been imprisoned by his government after a blood test required for his job showed some peculiarities. During his incarceration, the man was experimented on. The results were not as impressive as others, but he had enough technical aptitude to make himself of use to the government as an engineer in his own prison. The man used that access given to him to escape with military hardware.

Using the name of Addison Lao, he fled China. He sold the state secrets of China and a variety of military hardware to five different nations before he came to the United States. It was there that he was arrested by the DEO while trafficking arms in the harbor of Gotham City. During the raid, an egg-shaped device about the size of a pet carrier was knocked over. When the bullets ceased flying, an agent heard a startling sound coming from that apparatus: a baby's cry.

Shyleen Lao: 2005 - 2010[]

The discovered child was a baby girl of Asian heritage. She had been born naturally and placed in that stasis pod, apparently for storage. The girl was taken into custody by Gotham's child services, but within a week, the baby aged considerably prompting the DEO to take over the care of the child. She was given the name "Shyleen Doe" until tests determined a biological link to Addison Lao — specifically denoting that the arms dealer was the child's paternal uncle.

When the Chinese learned of the U.S. government's detaining of Mr. Lao (likely discovered during a suspicious data breach), they reached out to the United States and asked the U.S. to extradite Addison and Shyleen. However, the DEO refused as it had been declared that the girl's extraction from her mechanical stasis womb was classified as a birth in the United States and thus, by law, was a U.S. born citizen.

It was discovered that Shyleen shared half of the same DNA template of every Champion (China's mass-produced metahumans) that had been DNA tested by U.S. and U.N. intelligence agencies so far. Mr. Bones became concerned that China would attempt to abduct Shyleen, so I was asked to enroll her into my program which had relocated to Danny the Street.

When I met Shyleen, I saw a girl who, like my daughter Holly, had an appearance much older than she should. However, not like Holly, Shyleen was rapidly aging. The Chief and I put our heads together.

Shyleen Lao: 2010 - 2013[]

Dr. Niles Caulder and I were able to shut-off Shyleen's rapid aging. By the time we stopped her aging, Shyleen had already hit puberty. She was, for all intents and purposes, a thirteen-year-old girl despite only actually being a fraction of that age. That was several years ago now. Shyleen's aging over the last few years has been comparatively normal, but what has been less than normal was the activation of her metagene.

Fever: 2013 - Present[]

Without any traumatic trigger, Shy burst into flame one day. When she cooled off, her hair color was altered permanently. The next day, Arani Caulder gave Shy a pair of gloves she had previously used for training.

Supplemental Reports[]

  • (Submitted by Four-Eyes) This is not so much a supplement for Shyleen, but once again I feel the need to question use of the term "pyrokinetic" — which is a singularly unfortunate coinage. The correct term would be 'telepyrosis' (fire from a distance) or better still 'psychopyrosis' (fire from the mind), but here we are using a term taken from the pages of a science fiction book.
  • (Submitted by Herald) A lot of people focus on the United States being the primary victim of the Manhattaning. It is true that the United States had ten major cities attacked on that fateful date, and it can be argued that such devastation affected the most people on a grand scale, but in terms of pure body count, China suffered more destruction than any other nation. The two bombs that destroyed Shanghai and Beijing took more lives than the total of the ten bombs detonated in the United States due to population density and variance in the blast radius and payloads of the bombs. The government's response to the Manhattaning was to round up all possible extranormal beings within its borders regardless. Many persons disappeared within the first ten years after the Manhattaning in a period that the Chinese people still refer to as the Dark Decade.[1]
