First of the Fallen[]

Satan Symbol

Before there was the demon known as the First of the Fallen, there was an angel known as [REDACTED], the Chief Accuser of Heaven. In addition to being the fiercest opponent any Advocate for the Accused might face in court, [REDACTED] was also one of the most influential figures in Heaven, regularly dining with the Presence and discussing the state of Heaven and its future. When the Presence would not feel up to such meetings with [REDACTED], He would send his oldest son in His place. Through these long discussions over meals and shared drinks, the archangel Samael and [REDACTED] became close friends and allies.

Leading up to the Morningstar Rebellion, [REDACTED] became a fierce opponent of Sandalphon and their twin Metatron. [REDACTED] knew Sandalphon was conspiring to have Michael usurp Samael's rightful claim to the Silver Throne. [REDACTED] tried to have new laws enacted to prevent such from happening. Metatron used their status as the Vox Dei to stall the proceedings of the court to buy the twins more time to build their movement opposing Samael.

When Samael saw the size of the political movement against him, he volunteered to release his claim to the Silver Throne in exchange for a single denomination to rule as his own kingdom. [REDACTED] helped Samael secure the thirteen votes needed to grant Samael his request, which included the support of the likes of Amenadiel — Architect of Heaven, Apollyon — the Empyrean Champion, and the Voice of the Masses. However, when it came time for a vote, Amenadiel did not give his promised support and the motion failed.

Denied his request, Samael and his followers began the Morningstar Rebellion, determined to make Heaven bow to their simple request by force. The archangel Samael was the most powerful of the Morningstar Rebels, but he was not the only angel worth mentioning. [REDACTED] became Samael's first lieutenant and strategist. Apollyon became Samael's second lieutenant, champion, and general. The Voice of the Masses became Samael's third lieutenant, a chief recruiter to the cause, and a master of propaganda.

Though the Morningstar Rebellion was bravely fought, Sandalphon discovered how to enact the Rite of Rebirth, allowing Heaven's officers and more powerful figures to avoid death. This prevented the Morninstars from targeting key individuals to pressure Heaven into surrender. With Samael's resolve nearly broken by this recent development, [REDACTED] took to the battlefield himself to prove the Rite of Rebirth was not insurmountable. Finding Metatron in the fray, [REDACTED] delivered a furious end to his rival. The absolute pain delivered by [REDACTED] kept Metatron from a moment's peace needed to invoke the Rite.

However, it was all for not. Shortly after this, Michael defeated Samael, and the Morningstars were banished to the demon-infested Hell, but not before Sandalphon revealed a sadistic punishment crafted from a foul perversion of the Rite of Rebirth and unleashed it upon Samael's three lieutenants as retaliation for the murder of Metatron.

Stripped of his identity, [REDACTED] took a new form and gave himself a new name, Satan — the First of the Fallen. Though it was not the kingdom they asked for, Satan eagerly aligned himself with the Lucifer (a banished Samael) brought civilization, order, and structure to Hell.

Key Affiliations[]

  • House of Satan: The First of the Fallen is the patriarch of an infernal House given his name which refers to the political power held by himself, his children and wards, and his closest servants and followers.[1]

Threat Assessment[]

Resources[]

  • Fallen Physiology: The First of the Fallen is a former angel, stripped of his grace and name by a perversion of the Rite of Rebirth. However, this punishment also allowed him to absorb vast amounts of infernal energy when exiled to Hell which allowed him to rebuild himself as one of the most powerful demons in existence - likely more powerful than he was as an angel.
    • Chronokinesis: Satan can stall the flow of time temporarily, much to the frustration of Alpheus. Satan wisely uses this trick sparingly.
    • Dimensional Shifting/Teleportation: Satan can travel between the Void and Earth with immense ease, leaving a cloud of sulfur in his wake.
    • Enhanced Physicality: Satan is much stronger and faster than humans.
    • Immortality: The First of the Fallen has no fear of time or disease.
    • Invulnerability: The First of the Fallen is not easily killed by violence.
    • Resistance: The First of the Fallen is better able to resist anti-infernal measures compared to common demons.
    • Supernatural Senses: As an ephemeral being himself, Satan can see, hear, and interact with unmanifested ethereal and astral beings in reality. He can also read auras, see through illusion, and detect the use of magic in his presence with ease.
    • Telepathy (Limited): Though he cannot control minds, Satan can read mortal thoughts (easiest are those based on desire) and can influence or "tempt" mortals to loosen their inhibitions and act upon those desires.
  • Infernal Sorcery: The First of the Fallen is one of Hell's most powerful sorcerers. However, his own innate power pales in comparison to the next entry...
  • Lord of the Inferno: The First of the Fallen's most powerful magic is tied to the Inferno. The Inferno is one of several living stars in the Void. It is Inferno that gives much of Hell its signature red glow, charges the naturally inert essence clouds with infernal energy as they drift near it, and is the very source of the word 'Infernal'. With Lucifer having left Hell, Satan — as Lucifer's legal representative — now holds a pact made with the sentient star to lend its immense power to the King of Hell. Though the First of the Fallen has yet to be crowned as King, with this incredible power at his disposal he is King in all but name.

Weaknesses[]

  • Tell — Demonic Eyes: Satan's eyes glow like burning coals. Literally. He can't even wear sunglasses without them melting off his face.
  • Tell — Footprints: Satan's feet leave black soot marks on the ground. He cannot wear shoes as they would fill with hot soot and burn.
  • Vulnerability — Exorcism: Though he is highly resistant to it, Satan can be exorcised from an area by powerful exorcists. John Constantine has somehow learned Satan's true name and uses this to effortlessly cast the First of the Fallen back to Hell with a bold show of his middle finger.
  • Vulnerability — Unforged Iron: The First of the Fallen finds this metal more annoying than harmful, but weapons made from it can hurt him.
  • Vulnerability — Supernal Energy: Since his fall, supernal energy makes the First of the Fallen quite ill. He cannot enter true holy ground as a result and returning to Heaven would certainly kill him outright.

Trivia and Notes[]

Trivia[]

General[]

  • First of the Fallen is also a title a demon can hold. Unlike "Second of the Fallen" and "Third of the Fallen" often changed every few centuries while Satan remained constant... that is, until John Constantine tricked him into breaking an infernal law. Even though Satan was only stripped of his rank for a brief time, even by mortal standards, the First of the Fallen is still itching for a chance to make the Hellblazer pay for this insult.[2]
  • Vinz Clortho, officially, was once his advisor, but in practice, he was more of a court jester.[3]
  • He took part in a fight over Magdalene's soul.
  • He's responsible for Anthony and Cheryl Masters' death.[4]
  • Children who are fed his blood become a special kind of cambion called Grigori.[5]
  • After his death, Nick Necro was brought before him by Nergal. Through demonic pacts, Nick was restored to life to an unknown end.[6]

Rebellion[]

  • It was said that he was enamored with Lucifer's cause that he came to believe that the Presence was insane. He became a zealot which even Lucifer felt would go too far.
  • During the Morningstar Rebellion, Sandalphon engineered the Rite of Rebirth and taught it to his Principality peers and the officers within the ranks of the Pax Dei. This turned the tide of the Rebellion as it made it nearly impossible to kill the most capable of the loyalists. Faced with this, Samael was tempted to surrender but the First urged him to fight on. At the next battle, the First targeted Metatron, Sandalphon's twin, on the battlefield and proved definitively that killing angels was still possible in spite of Rebirth. This display gave the Morningstar Rebellion a few more battles before Samael was defeated in a personal battle against Michael.
  • The First was stripped of his grace, his titles, and his name. Banished from Heaven and cast down to Hell, the First preceded many other angels who would fall for their part in the rebellion. When he found Lucifer in exile, he once again dedicated himself to serving his former master but was surprised to find that the ritual which had taken his name had also affected Lucifer's memory. In time, the mortals of Earth would give the First a new name: "Satan," which meant "the Adversary."

Politics of Hell[]

  • Lucifer arranged a union between Abaddon and Satan this was meant to secure an alliance negotiated by Lucifer to counter some political maneuvers being undertaken by Azazel, the original Third of the Fallen, many thousands of years ago. Ultimately, the alliance held for a thousand of years but eventually crumbled due to Satan and Abaddon's lack of chemistry failing to produce a number of demonic offspring required to create the political powerhouse that the plan had required. The most significant child born from this union was Nebiros.[7]
  • He secured a lighter punishment for his adoptive son Satanus during the Anung Un Rama incident. Infernus likely had a significant role in it.[8]
  • Ever since Lucifer departed Hell the two of them rarely speak as he has never forgiven Lucifer for not naming him his successor.[9]
  • He appointed figureheads to fill the other positions of the Fallen.[10]

Notes[]

  • His portrait is based on his appearance in Justice League Dark Vol. 2.
  • His aliases are various figures from mythology:
    • In the original Hebrew term Satan is a generic noun meaning "accuser" or "adversary".
    • Iblis is the leader of the devils in Islam.
    • Shaytan are evil spirits in Islamic belief, inciting humans to sin.
    • Yetzer Hara in Judaism is the congenital inclination to do evil, by violating the will of God.
