Janine Melnitz: 1980 - 2003

Janine is the youngest of two girls to software engineer Simon Melnitz and his wife, a supposedly mousy housewife named Edith. Janine had a charmed life and mostly got along with her sister Doris (though the two did fight over boys, clothes, and the like).

Rarely seeing her workaholic father, Janine and her sister were mostly raised by their mother, who taught them to never be afraid to take what they wanted and be comfortable living the life they wanted to live. Janine suspected this was her mother's way of living vicariously through her daughters. Both girls turned out to be bold maneating feminists (Janine took two dates to her prom), but when Doris got pregnant right out of high school and settled down with her loser boyfriend, Janine decided that was not going to happen to her. She took her mind off living for the moment and focused on her future. Janine decided to take her savings from flipping burgers at Big Belly Burger and apply it to college rather than going on a big European trip with her hedonistic friends.

While in college, Janine took classes on computer engineering hoping it would build the connection to her father that she had been missing. Janine knew a few more tricks than most of her class thanks to her having some exposure to coding due to her father's work and before she knew it, Janine began hosting study sessions for her classmates. Through this, Janine found out that three members of her study group were involved in a hacktivist movement. Wanting some friends to replace those partying in Vlatava without her, Janine decided to join their cause.

Janine Melnitz: 2003 - 2004

It all went so good and Janine felt fulfilled in her life, until the DEO crashed one of their hacking parties. It turns out that Janine and her classmates had been tricked into thinking they were shutting down inhumane corporate testing labs but, were in actuality, crashing covert DEO server farms and other secret government facilities.

Janine spent nine months in jail until she was visited by a blonde white hat hacker who was investigating Janine's case. Janine was able to convince this ponytailed badass of her innocence, giving her the motivation to work tirelessly to get the court case dismissed. Janine's awesome new friend managed to help Green Arrow find evidence that the college-aged hackers had been duped by someone using an encrypted DEO IP address and the screen name of "Mockingbird," clearing Janine's name and getting her released with 'time served.'

Janine Melnitz: 2004 - 2009

Janine found it hard to get a job with her criminal record. Luckily, she had such an awesome friend who offered Janine a room in her apartment and a job. Janine took the room and became the secretary of Oliver Queen. But promptly quit when he decided to go into politics.

Janine Melnitz: 2009 - 2010

After months of temp jobs and not paying her share of the rent, Janine decided to take a chance and applied for a secretarial position at an extermination company. Her bosses had no idea what they were in for.[1]

Supplemental Reports

  • (Submitted by TurtleGurl84) Fun facts about Janine Melnitz:
    • Enjoys nothing more than chamomile tea while reading a good book.
    • Considers "The Scene" and its sister podcasts to be necessities.
    • Regularly gives herself an "Employee of the Month" bonus to pay rent.
    • Despite being a computer expert, she pesters Egon to fix her computer.
  • (Submitted by Four-Eyes) Most people dismiss Janine's claims of being "a little bit psychic" but she does register as having slightly elevated PKE readings. Dormant or latent psychic? Furthermore, she has considerable intuition regarding people, making her a remarkable judge of character more often than not and possessed of considerable insight. Case in point: She had the foresight to agree to join the Ghostbusters despite the unpolished nature of their early operations and Peter Venkman's personality being a big turn-off for her. Though, perhaps infatuation rather than intuition was to blame there. Janine was immediately attracted to Egon from the start. Of course, that could be a result of psychic magnetism as Egon himself comes from a potent psychic lineage.
