Ilsa Haupstein: 1893 - 1915[]

Ilsa is the third daughter of a perfectly normal upper-class German family. Other than Ilsa's older sister going missing when Ilsa was still a baby, the Haupsteins had a charmed life. Since her birth, it was clear that Ilsa was different from all the other kids, as she never cried, not even as an infant. As a child, Ilsa rarely showed much of her feelings. Combining this trait with her interest in ice skating earned her the nickname of Ice Princess by her friends and family.

When Ilsa was ten, the Haupsteins realized Ilsa was genuinely exceptional ice skater and sent their daughter to Berlin to train with her uncle. At sixteen, Ilsa was celebrated as the best German figure skater. Ilsa went on to win many competitions, including the Gold Medal for Ladies' Figure Skating at the 1908 Olympics in London and several installments of the Nordic Games. Indeed, Ilsa was the top of her game until an accident caused by sabotaged skates left her severely injured and thus forced to abandon competitions at the young age of twenty-two.

Ilsa Haupstein: 1915 - 1917[]

While in recovery, Ilsa woke up one night to witness her uncle cutting his wrist and pouring the spilled blood across Ilsa's face. Panicked, Ilsa jumped from her bed and tried to wrestle the knife from her uncle. During the struggle, Ilsa's uncle let out a strange gasp and then immediately went limp. The unexpected ceasing of resistance caused Ilsa to accidentally pull her uncle towards her, causing her to trip and fall, with her uncle falling over Ilsa and onto the knife.

As Ilsa tried to stop the bleeding, she watched her uncle look at her with confusion. Then as his final breaths questioned Ilsa on why she had murdered him, a perplexed Ilsa found her uncle's dying words drowned out by the laughter of an amorphous form in the shadows of her bedroom. As Ilsa look closer, she slowly saw dozens of eyes looking at her with wicked intent as several mouths grinned with sinister delight. Ilsa disappeared shortly after this. Her uncle's murdered body was found weeks later when the police came to the home to question Ilsa about the brutal murder of Ilsa's former skating rival.

Instructed by the Third of the Fallen, the demon Azazel, Ilsa sought out the demon Belphegor who was infiltrating the Germanenorden (or Order of Teutons) at the time. Belphegor brought Ilsa into the secret society and offered to grant her further powers to compliment that which she had already received from Azazel. Ilsa pledged herself to Belphegor and thus became a witch — furthering her dark descent.

After her initial indoctrination, Ilsa was sent to Russia to retrieve the remains of Rasputin. She was partially successful, as she retrieved the body in its mystical slumber but the revived Rasputin was left in a damaged and chronically weak body. Still, she managed to bring the mystic to Germany as instructed by her masters.

Upon the return of Ilsa with the zombified Rasputin, Belphegor had transformed a chapter of the Germanenorden into the Thule Society, where Rasputin agreed to pledge his service to Belphegor in exchange for Belphegor calling forth another grigori witch, Karl Kroenen, to alchemically fashion a new body for Rasputin to replace the severely damaged vessel his prolonged torpor had caused.

Ilsa Haupstein: 1917 - 1944[]

It took decades to properly craft a body suitable for Rasputin. In that time, Ilsa and Rasputin became close and intimate. Though Rasputin was forced to remain sequestered from the public, Ilsa had profound success infiltrating European society, particularly at home in Germany. Under a new identity, Ilsa married Kurt Steiner, an officer in the German military.

When war broke out, Ilsa used her influence to get her husband to oversee a prison — supplying Kroenen with the victims he would need to perfect the creation of Rasputin's new body. Once the body was nearly complete, Ilsa slit her own husband's throat to power the ritual to revive her lover.

With Rasputin returned to life, their evil plan was ready to be undertaken — the summoning of the Great Beast of Revelation to unleash its wrath of the world![1]

Notes[]

  • Ilsa Haupstein is a character from the Hellboy series and its related media.
  • Her appearance is based on the actress Bridget Hodson, who portrayed her in the del Toro Hellboy 2004 film.
  • She's a composite character with Anneliese Steiner the mentor of Johann Kraus, Ingrid Weiss who is the archenemy of Tom Strong, and Fausta Grables from the Wonder Woman 1979 TV series, who went under the alias of Eloise Livington.
  • Her husband Kurt Steiner was a Schutzstaffel officer in charge of the Fortress Regensdorf, in which prisoners of war were kept during WWII in the Unknown Soldier comic book series.
  • Her son Albrecht Strong is the bastard son of Tom Strong conceived by artificial methods, he was raised under the nazi ideology by his mother.
  • Fun fact from Roy: She was a gymnast in the original comics, however I made her older so she would be the one to have rescued Rasputin's remains, with that came complications from real world athletics. The Olympics didn't have female gymnasts (other than pre-competition "display shows") until 1936 but I liked Ilsa being an Olympic athlete so I had to look at what females did compete in. My options were figure skating and swimming. I chose figure skating as I felt that could be used with her lack of emotions to be nicknamed "Ice Princess" and I felt that was transfer well to giving her some flashy acrobatic gunplay and martial arts moves.
Spoiler
Her Ops Moniker as Iron Maiden is a nod how in the comics she sacrificed herself using an iron maiden, with her blood serving as an offering to the goddess Hecate.
