In the aftermath, he realized that he had not only killed the soldiers, but also his mother.

As an orphan, Max became a petty criminal to survive while on the lam. After several minor adventures, Max found himself in Israel. With limited resources and no history, Max joined the military.
Early Adulthood: 1978 - 1983
Knowing he was different, Max became increasingly distrustful. He only found comfort among other marginalized peoples and took to living with a Romany camp near Mt. Wundagore, living under the name Josef Maximoff. He fell in love with a Romany woman named Magda. When it was discovered that she was pregnant, the two were married. To support his family, Josef found work in a nearby smelting factory.

Military Service: 1969 - 1973
In rapid succession, Josef and his young wife had four children. Their first was Anya, followed by the twins Pietro and Wanda, and finally Lorna. With the birth of Lorna, Josef realized his gift was genetic and could no longer keep the secret from Magda as their daughter had been born with bright green hair, eyes, and lips.

  +
Max was involved in a number of conflicts with the Egyptian military and Arab coalitions in the Sinai peninsula. The violence brought out the worst in Max and he chose to desert, catching the first available boat.

Transia: 1973 - 1984
Weeks later, a drunken mob formed after hearing the rumor of the girl born to Josef and Magda, which reignited tales of strange things others had seen Josef do. Violence broke out at the Romany camp. As the men tried to burn Josef alive, Anya ran out to save her father. Magda tried to rein her daughter in, but both were shot in the confusion. Seeing his wife and daughter murdered, Josef released his fury.

Now using his mother's maiden name to create his true identity as Erik Lehnsherr, Erik settled in the remote area surrounding Mt. Wundagore. Erik took comfort among marginalized peoples and took to living with a Romany camp. He fell in love with a young woman in the camp. Her name was Magda Maximoff. When it was discovered she was pregnant, Erik promised to care for her. To better support his family, Erik found work in a factory in a nearby city.

In rapid succession, Erik and his lover had four children. Their first was Anya, followed by the twins Pietro and Wanda, and finally Lorna. Lorna had been born with green hair, eyes, and lips. In light of this, Erik revealed his own abilities to Magda. Not only did Magda accept Erik, but so did most of her camp, leading to Erik accepting his nature and allowing himself to be truly happy for the first time in his life.
Josef buried his wife and eldest daughter, but left the other corpses for the crows. With the graves dug, Josef gathered his living children, and brought them with him to America.

However, years later, a drunken mob formed after hearing the rumor of the girl born to Erik and Magda, along with other tales concerning Erik. Violence broke out at the camp. As the men dragged Erik out, Anya ran out to save her father. Magda chased after Anya but both were shot in the confusion by a drunken member of the mob.
Coming to America: 1983 - 1985
En route to America, Josef took on a new identity for himself and his children. He became Erik Lehnsherr and give his children his mother's maiden name. Upon arrival in New York City, Erik found work as a car mechanic. And though he did his best to remain unnoticed, he was still found by other "freaks." Jason Wyngarde and Raven Darkholme drafted Erik to partake in an infiltration of ESU's Human Genome Project. Erik agreed, as he was eager to get answers to his gift's origin.

Upon seeing Magda and Anya shot, Erik lost control of his powers. In the bloody aftermath, Erik buried his loved ones, but left the other corpses for the crows. With the graves dug, Erik gathered his living children, and brought them with him to America.
Revelations: 1985 - 1995
Erik got a job at ESU to gain access to the Human Genome Project. While working as an electrician, he met yet another mutant: Charles Xavier. Charles helped Erik realize there was nothing "wrong" with him, and that he was just a "mutant:" The next step in human evolution.

Coming to America: 1985 - 1995
When Erik's investigation with Raven and Jason discovered that there were others using the project to gather information on mutants, he told Charles. Charles convinced Erik to join him in using the files to start a private community for mutants at Charles' family estate.

Upon arriving in America, Erik carried out several jobs to support his family. Erik soon met Raven Darkholme and Jason Wyngarde. The two other mutants were infiltrating the Human Genome Project to find others of their kind, and Erik was soon drafted to their cause. Erik got a job as an electrician for Empire State University to gain access to the HGP.

  +
Erik met Professor Charles Xavier and the two became friends over long talks about their dreams for championing the cause of the mutant race. Though Erik, Raven, and Jason were prepared to start a war with humans over information discovered by the HGP, Charles eventually convinced Erik to give peace a try and join him in creating a school for mutant children. Believing this is what Magda would want, Erik agreed.
As the majority of mutants they found were children Charles and Erik founded a school. Erik became the assistant headmaster of the school and enrolled his own children as students.

Quite the contrary, the presence of children seems to have a calming effect on Erik. This school seems to be just what he needs to heal.
